我們在形塑文化的同時，文化同時也回過頭來形塑了我們自己。那什麼是 '文化' 呢？文化一詞，最早由古羅馬哲學家西塞羅首次用拉丁文 'cultura animi' 所定義，原意是 '生的培養與發育'，由此衍生為生物在其發展過程中積累出與自身生活相關的知識或經驗，以能適應自然或周圍的環境，是一群共同生活在區域或相類自然環境及經濟生產方式的個體，所形成的一種 '約定俗成的'、'集體意識的'、'默許遵守的' 外在表現。文化有各種各樣的定義，其中之一的意義是 '相互透過學習人類思想與行為的精華來達到完美 (Arnold, Matthew. Culture and Anarchy. New York: Macmillan. Third edition, 1882)；廣義的文化包括文字、語言、建築、飲食、工具、技能、技術、知識、習俗、藝術等。大致上可以用 '一個民族的生活形式' 以表示之，謂該民族 (族群、社會、國家) 之 '文化'。
