Balthus (Balthasar Klossowski de Rola) (1908-2001), French painter, primarily of interior scenes and urban landscapes. Balthus’s paintings are charged with a mysterious atmosphere that can also carry erotic overtones. His best-known works depict adolescent girls in languid poses.
Balthus is the pseudonym of Balthasar Klossowski de Rola, who was born in Paris, the son of Polish aristocrats who were both painters. Self-taught, he began painting early in life. He painted portraits and landscapes, especially cityscapes, such as The Street (1933-1934, Museum of Modern Art, New York City). Balthus concentrated primarily on interior scenes that included adolescent girls, as in The Children (1936, Louvre, Paris). This scene, painted in muted colors, communicates a dreamy mood that shows the influence of surrealism, a movement that emphasized the role of the subconscious in art. Balthus’s realism was indebted to the paintings of French artist Gustave Courbet. Balthus borrowed forms freely from Italian painters of the 15th century, especially Piero della Francesca. After painting in oils for two decades, Balthus turned to tempera painting, a method used by Italian masters of the early Renaissance. Tempera is an egg-based paint that dries to a matte (nonshiny) finish and was well-suited to Balthus’s somber and refined color range.
