English version: 3. Yet it means not inward repentance only; nay, there is no inward repentance which does not outwardly work divers mortifications of the flesh.
Original translation: 3. 但它也並非僅僅意味著內心懺悔,若無各種外部的苦行,亦無效能。
My translation: 3. 但非僅止於內心懺悔;懲忿治欲,向善力行,亦應隨之而來。
Notation: Mortifications here can not necessarily be meant solely as ‘penance’ practiced by medieval friars or monastic.

English version: 7. God remits guilt to no one whom He does not, at the same time, humble in all things and bring into subjection to His vicar, the priest.
Original translation: 7. 神為人赦罪,還要同時使他凡事謙恭,順服於他的代表 --- 神父。
My translation: 7. 凡事不願順服於 神的旨意並尊重神職人員者, 神難赦免其罪。
Notation: ‘He does not humble’ would mean ‘unwilling to succumb to His Wills’; 'bring into subjection to’ should be, to nowadays, ‘pay respect to’. Sentence patterns are better rearranged.

English version: 12. In former times the canonical penalties were imposed not after, but before absolution, as tests of true contrition.
Original translation: 12. 從前,作為真誠懺悔的考驗,教會法的處罰是在赦罪之前,而不是在其後。
My translation: 12. 昔時,教廷對百姓之處分措施皆施行於赦免其罪行之前,以作為其真誠懺悔之確據。
Notation: The canonical penalties were as tests and warranties to verify, at least, one had sincerity to contrite. So it was supposed to be logical, to Luther’s opinion, to do the penalties beforehand, not afterward as so-called traffics in pardons.

English version: 19. Again, it seems unproved that they, or at least that all of them, are certain or assured of their own blessedness, though we may be quite certain of it.
Original translation: 19. 同時也沒有証明,煉獄中的靈魂,至少不是全部,確信自己已經得救,即使我們自己可能對此確信無疑。
My translation: 19. 再者,儘管教廷保證欲求赦免者之罪懕,亦無可證明其必可獲致 神的赦免。
Notation: This is a further statement derived from No. 17, where the former translator might mistake the subjective ‘souls in purgatory’ for ‘souls in hell’ which should simply be ‘people who want to purge themselves’.

English version: 23. If it is at all possible to grant to any one the remission of all penalties whatsoever, it is certain that this remission can be granted only to the most perfect, that is, to the very fewest.
Original translation: 23. 如果說有某些人能接受全部免罰的話,那也只有完美無暇的人才能得到,僅有極少數而已。
My translation: 23. 若謂世間有人配得免除其罪,此乃真義人也。
Notation: It is a bit ironic here to read here as ‘If is at all possible’ and ‘to the very fewest’. Luther might believe no one in fact could deserve this act for the Bible explicitly said “There is none righteous, no, not one.” (Romans 3:10)

English version: 25. The power which the pope has, in a general way, over purgatory, is just like the power which any bishop or curate has, in a special way, within his own diocese or parish.
Original translation: 25. 教皇對煉獄一般擁有的這種權力,同每個主教在自己的轄區和每個神父在本教區所擁有的權力相當。
My translation: 25. 轄區主教、神父、甚至教皇,其對於主持淨罪儀式之能力及權限,並無二致。
Notation: Luther might here allude the real authorities in this world, in humans, to have the right to remit human sins had ever existed except for God Himself.

English version: 59. St. Lawrence said that the treasures of the Church were the Church's poor, but he spoke according to the usage of the word in his own time.
Original translation: 59. 聖勞倫斯說過,教會的貧窮便是教會的寶藏,不過,他這樣說是沿襲了他那個時代的詞意。
My translation: 59. 聖勞倫斯曾說,貧窮乃教會之寶。吾人應注意該句隱喻及聖氏之時代背景,不宜強解。
Notation: Proper word choice and pragmatism with times shouldn’t be more emphasized in translation, included Luther himself.

English version: 71 He who speaks against the truth of apostolic pardons, let him be anathema and accursed!
Original translation: 71. 那些攻擊教皇贖罪券真相的人應受詛咒和譴責。
My translation: 71. 凡攻訐使徒時代所闡揚關於赦免之真義者,應受咒詛並譴責!
Notation: The former translation would be more correct if the apostolic would be written in capital. Still, it might be semantically misunderstanding the word ‘truth’ instead of 'the real situation’ or even ‘conspiracy’, where Luther held it rather conservative.

English version: 73. The pope justly thunders against those who, by any art, contrive the injury of the traffic in pardons.
Original translation: 73. 如同教皇有理由對那些千方百計阻撓贖罪券發售的人大發雷霆一樣。
My translation: 73. 教宗亦應大加譴責意欲以任何形式、理由販售贖罪劵者。
Notation: It is also an unfolded statement from No. 70, 71, and 72.

English version: 91. If, therefore, pardons were preached according to the spirit and mind of the pope, all these doubts would be readily resolved; nay, they would not exist. Original translation: 91. 如果按照教皇的精神和意願來宣揚贖罪券,那麼所有的疑慮都會很快消除,甚至不再存在。

Original translation: 93. 向基督信徒宣揚「十字架、十字架」,而實際上沒有十字架的先知們應當蒙福。
My translation: 93. 而不時提醒信徒們「十字架」苦難精神的人有福了,如今該精神竟已蕩然無存!
Notation: Heinous misinterpretation!

English version: 94. Christians are to be exhorted that they be diligent in following Christ, their Head, through penalties, deaths, and hell;
Original translation: 94. 應當告誡基督徒通過苦行、死亡和地獄,忠心追隨其主基督。
My translation: 吾人應追隨 耶穌基督之帶領,俾能平安度過眾罪刑罰與死蔭幽谷。
Notation: Chinese syntactic errors.

English version: 95. And thus be confident of entering into heaven rather through many tribulations, than through the assurance of peace.
Original translation: 95. 唯有經歷各種苦難,而不是虛假的平安擔保(徒14:22),才能有把握進入天國。
My translation: 忍耐到底的,必然得救;而非藉著那哄騙平安的話語。
Notation: As Acts 14:22 says, “Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.”, which means before we enter the Lord’s Reign, we have to inevitably encounter much tribulation in this life. We are all blessed if we know how to face it, go through it, and conquer it with the help of God. Tribulation is an un-evaded situation, not a necessary precondition to Heaven.
