Mark Wessels' Rudimental Technique

Exercise #1: Rebound 8's

This simple "8 on a hand" exercise works on the REBOUND stroke, named for the way the stick is allowed to naturally REBOUND after it strikes the drum head. The motion of the stick should be similar to a bouncing ball: smooth and fluid.

To produce the rebound stroke, simply "throw" the stick to the head and allow it to rebound naturally. If you keep the fingers and wrist relaxed, the energy created when the stick strikes the head will be enough to push the stick and hand back to the starting position. DO NOT PULL THE STICK BACK UP! Allow the stick and the head to do all the work! Keep the fulcrum in tact, with the back fingers resting lightly on the stick.

Metronome to 200 BPM / quarter note
