'Numbers' tells about the population management for Israelites conducted by Moses according to the Lord's will. Before the demography, the story begins when the Israelites set out from Mt. Sinai, following the Ark of Covenant and the colorful clouds leading them the right direction till the way to the south bound field of the 'Promised Land', Canaan. They send spies to investigate Canaan, and the spies make a canard and all the falsehoods against their people, depreciating that Israelites are like locusts to be crushed by the strong giants in Canaan. So loses faith the Israel to the Lord. And they wish to be slaved in Egypt again.
Isn't it my weak mental and short-sightedness? Isn't it the faith even smaller than a mustard seed but bigger than mine?
The Lord would not just look on. He decides to discipline His children by punishing him lingering around the outer border of Canaan, unable to come into the land till they regain their faith toward the Lord and know how to follow His will rather than playing a goat foolhardily only to get themselves into countless trouble.
Is there anything in the Universe that is stronger than the love of our Father toward us?
During the 40 years, the Israelites learn about and experience the take-after and teachings of the Lord, both in hard times and high times. And they are becoming more and more mentally tough and philosophical in accrodance with His will. In the mean time, the Lord will not leave His promise to His children, in spite that how rebellious they are, always keeping an eye on them with care and cherishing.
Again, is there anything in the Universe that is stronger than the love of our Father toward us?
Even Moses' personality and faith is tested and fluctuating in the wilderness, though. He is a modest and decent man, having great faith toward the Lord. While at his old age, he sometimes also loses his temper, or, plays tantrums in the eyes of the Lord, against some adversities. He also ignores the Lord's order to hit the stone with his cane for water, for which Moses is punished not to enter Canaan in the rest of his life. Love is love, yet the Lord would still take Moses in His hand.
Human errs; great people err, for they are human too, no matter how great they can be. Who do I think I am if even Moses acts like that?
Ok, never mind. Let's now take a look at what about the Israelites after 40 years' training at the end of the Scripture. In chapter 26 reads the result of the second demography on the whole Israel, in the days of fatigue, starving, food shortage, pestilence --- over 600,000 people! That is, there are 27 members in an average single family! In such malicious conditions of living, the Israelite people can still be so productive, prolific, and resilient, ready to take back what since long belongs to them, the Canaan! Most important of all, they not only have a robust physical outframe, but a compliant heart with their Custodian, Guardian, Leader, and, dear Father.
