Mark Wessels' Rudimental Technique

     Exercise #14: Triplet Diddle

This exercise takes the isolated diddle concept learned in the previous lesson and applies it to triple time. Use the same technique concepts: use wrists and fingers at a slow tempo to play double STROKES, double BOUNCES at a faster tempo.

Break it down to one beat segments at a very slow tempo first. For instance, in measure 2, play just count 1, ending on the downbeat of count 2 (RRL R L); then count two to the downbeat of 3 (LLR L R L). Once you can play the isolated pattern on each hand separately, put the first two beats together (RRL R LLR L R). Do this for all of the isolated patterns.

Practice it at one consistent volume level, with no accents or "pulsations" on the downbeats – then add downbeat accents.

Metronome to 172 BPM / quarter note
