Etymology
From Proto-Finno-Ugric *waĺɜ. Cognates include dialectal Finnish valu (“light”), Estonian valu (“light (poetic)”), Komi-Permyak волявны (voljavny, “shine”) and Hungarian világ (“light”). Compare also Finnish valkea (“white, fire, bright”), Estonian valgus (“light”), from *walke.
