今日選字：about-face 源自軍事口令「向後轉！」，意指態度、行為或觀點上的大轉變。

與 face 相關的片語很多，像是在國、高中時期學過的 face to face（面對面）、face the music（面對現實、承擔後果）等等。學習英文有幾座必須攻克的大山，其中一座就是典故，對我們這些「外國人」來說，英文典故難雖難矣，卻也是學習樂趣之所在。

今日選字 about-face 也有其典故，它是軍隊操練（drill）的指令，是指在立正的狀態下，向後旋轉180度，也就是「向後轉」，衍伸出的意思如上所述。而剛剛提到的國中片語 face the music 也是有典故的，說法有二，其一跟軍隊有關。據說當兵士遭到開除，離開軍隊時，部隊會吹奏音樂，所以離開的人當然得「face the music」。其二與音樂劇相關，上了舞台，緊張在所難免，但是當演出的音樂響起時，不管演員有多緊張，都得馬上進入狀況，於是就有了「face the music」這個說法。
