I met a senior graduate from Hsin-tien High School this Thrusday, who used to attend the same language class with me before. He has just finished his master courses in English literature in National Kaohsiung Normal University recently and fetched his title, going back home triumphantly, and  for the time being, preparing for serving in the military a couple of weeks later. He was a person with a zealous mind, always tending to help others wherever he went, especially with problems of language learning and trouble encountered in our daily lives.

He told me a little metaphor from Leo Tolstoy, one of the greatest lions in Russian literature, who wrote many heart-searching articles, through which Tolstoy was considered also the "last humanist" in modern times. It was all about the accurate description of the viewpoint we see ourselves, the so-called genuine ego. And that did surge great impact on me:

"True ego can be valued by a fraction, where the numerator is the exact amount of one's own caliber and talent whereas the denominator is the degree of how much one values oneself or how great one thinks he or she would be alone. And the result is quite reasonable.", Tolstoy pointed out, "The net quotient of such fraction will be smaller if the denominator is larger, that is, the more one thinks oneself to be greater, the true value of the individual depreciates. But quite the other way round, if one values him- or herself less, it would not only do no harm to their personal capacities but the outcome appears rather even more eminent." Indeed, the value of true ego depends on how we look at ourselves.

On listiening this, I thought to myself: I used to be full of so much conceit and erudition, always superior to others by all means. It turned out that I was no more than a mere particle, a pathetique iota in the merciful universe, which allows my arrogance and ignorance for so long...
