Beethovan's Centenary (adapted)

by George Bernard Shaw

Now what Beethovan did, and what made some of his greatest contemporaries give him up as a madman with lucid intervals of clowning and bad taste, was that he used music altogether as a means of expressing moods, and completely threw over pattern designing as an end in itself. It is true that he used old patterns all his life with dogged conservatism, but he imposed on them such an overwhelming charge of human energy and passion, including that highest passion which acompanies thought, and reduces the passion of physical appetites to mere animalism, that he not only played Old Harry with their symmetry but often made it impossible to notice that there was any pattern at all beneath the storm of emotion.

小猜謎,猜對今天我請吃飯:文中的 Old Harry 指的是甚麼意思?

1. Make it your goal to live at peace with others.
Is it possible to do this with everyone in our lives? Unfortunately, no; even our best efforts may not change another person’s attitude. The key is to ask God if we’re at fault, and if so, to confess it and seek his help to overcome it.

2. Treat others as you’d want them to treat you.
This simple but profound principle—the golden rule—comes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. How different our lives would be if we actually practiced this!

Dear Ms. S,
the rearrangement for your demand on taking the examination with your husband respectively is as followed:

1. Your husband will be here at the hospital at 7:15 on Feb, 14 while the hotel check-in time has only to be available at 15:00. In this case, we'll offer you and your husband an individual waiting room during the period. It is a pity that the management system between hospital waiting rooms and hotel rooms is independant.

2. Due to the hotel room check-out time at 11:00 next day, Feb. 15, and the examination duration lasts till  afternoon, we still will have a room in hospital for your waiting and resting.

imagination (adapted)

by george santayana (1863~1952)

men are ruled by imgination: imagination makes them in men, capable of madness and of immese labours. we work dreaming. consider what dreams must have dominated the builders of the pyramids, dreams geometrical, dreams funereal, dreams of resurrction, dreams of outdoing the pyramid of some other pharoah! what dreams occupy that fat man in the street, toddling by under his shabby hat and bedraggled rain-coat? perhaps he is in love; perhaps he is a catholic, and imagines that early this moring he has partaken of the body and blood of Christ; perhaps he is a revolutionist, with the millennium in his heart and a bomb in his pocket. the spirit blows where it pleases. nothing could be madder, more irresponsible, more dangerous than this guidance of men by dreams.

以下是改完的稿子,改的內容就麻煩自行比對囉:

We have heard quite a few columnists describe the 21 century as an era of  chaos. We have witnessed ISIS doing whatever they wanted due to their willingness to use extremely violence. We have seen Trump  use Twitter to irritate North Korea, which led to Kim's restless nuclear weapon explosion test. But why should these international conflicts occur? As a member of the younger generation, raised up by a Taiwanese family engaging in international trading business, I always wonder why there is no one that is able to control the situation. It's a pity that the world didn't become a better place under those politicians' hands. And this is also the reason why my parents and my uncle, a zealous and devoted statesman in Taiwan for decades, always admonishing me to tell the nuances between what our government has promised and done.

As informed at Tsai-Hsing high school that Durham University is releasing their admissions guide to those who have a strong will and determination, I knew that it is the golden opportunity for me to be well-equipped in the field of politics. Being active in school societies and inter-class services for quite a time, I was elected as the class leader, vice class leader and PE agent to name but just a few. While being class servants, I gradually noticed that people always pertain to self-beneficial inclination. This may be, in my understanding, similar to that among countries and policies.

大寫的地方,用小寫改;小寫的地方,用大寫改。不改的是,原作者文法上的極小錯誤、修辭、風格、與邏輯:

FAMILY BACKGROUND
TO USE A SENTENCE TO DESCRIBE MYSELF, I WOULD SAY: THAT
"I'M THE COMBINATION OF EASTERN ASIAian CULTURE."
MY MATERNAL GRANDPA on my mother's side IS FROM MAINLAND CHINA and GRANDMA FROM KOREA, GRANDPA on my father's side FROM TAIWAN AND GRANDMA JAPAN.DUE TO THIS UNIQUE FAMILY BACKGROUND I HAVE BEEN LEARNING FOUR DIFFERENT LANGUAGES AND ABSORBING MULTI-CULTURE point of views SINCE I WAS YOUNG. ALSO BECAUSE OF THIS MULTI-CULTURE BACKGROUND, I BEGAN TO THINK ABOUT WHY A SAME THING, A SAME WAR EVEN A SAME HISTORICAL FIGURE WOULD bring about HAVE A TOTALLY DIFFERENT PERCEPTION ON ACCOUNT OF DIFFERENT PERSONALITies OR CIVILIZATIONs.

LIFE EXPERIENCE
MY PARENTS OFTEN TOLD ME THAT "IF IT DOESN'T KILL YOU, IT MAKES YOU STRONGER."
DURING MY LIFE BEFORE 10-YEAR-OLD I HAD BEEN MOVING FROM PLACES TO PLACES FOR ABOUT 7 TIMES AND TRANSFERing FROM 3 DIFFERENT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. MOST CRITICAL CONDITIONs HAPPENED WHEN I WAS 3-YEAR-OLD. IT WAS a WINTER, MY DAD TURNed ON THE HEATER BEFORE HE WENT TO WORK WHILE MY MOM AND I WERE STILL SLEEPING, but mom has yet to sleep soundly. SLEPT RESTLESSLY, HEARING SOMEBODY YELLING "FIFTH FLOOR IS on fire BURNING!",SHE OPENED HER EYES. OUR HOUSE WAS IN A SEA OF FLAMES. had MY MOM not WAKEd UP, YOU would not have had to READ THIS PERSONAL STATEMENT THEN. WHAT THESE EXPERIENCE INFLUENCEd ME IS THAT I BECOME A MORE alert SOCIABLE PERSON, AND I CAN SOON ACCOMMODATE MYSELF TO NEW SURROUNDINGS.

QUOTE
'It is not the strongest of species that survives,
nor the most intelligent,
but the one most responsive to change.'
--CHARLES DARWIN,1809

WHY PSYCHOLOGY ?
During the summer vacation before entering grade 10, I went on a study tour to Hawaii. As I arrived Hawaii I was breathing in the air of equality, even at Arizona Memorial which in my stereotype stands for hatred and conflicts. Japanese and Americans all mourned for the tragedy in harmony, I was shocked and felt stunnED about it. What kind of mindset made this incredible phenomenon happened? At that moment, my curiosity of psychology aroused.
Then I went on an international volunteer working to Cambodia during my summer vacation before entering grade 11. By the time I set off, my heart was filled with gratification and enthusiasm. When I came back, however, I was filled with suspiSion. What raised my doubt was certainly this international aid program. On the first day we arrived, although local children generously assisted us to get use to the environment, I could feel the slightly resist from them. After a period of time to getTING along with each other, I gradually understood the beginning and end. Every year there are millions of people pouring into these underdeveloped countries. They promised that they will come back , but never step on the same land again; they promised that they will keep in touch, but ended up messages seen. We called ourselves as volunteers. We declared that we askED nothing in return, however, deep in our bones we believed that we are superior. I didn't made make any promise at last although I know knew that I definitely will meet them in the future for such the reason or that promises WOULD have been too cheap.
Since then, I am deeply fascinated by psychology. I want to find out what I can do to soothe their wounded soulS, I am curious about how can we WE CAN be so selfish. I want to know what others are thinking about and I want to give myself a chance to give assistance to THEM others. It is my dream to become a psychiatrist.

WHY BRITAIN?
@ AMERICAn PSYCHOLOGY INDUSTRY IS DEFINETLY WELL-DEVELOPED, THIS MIGHT BE RELATED TO THEIR OPEN SOCIETY AND THE STRAICHT WAY THEY COMMUNICATE. NOT TO MENTION THE CUMULATIVE STRESS THEY SUFFER IN SUCH A COMPETITIVE SOCIETY. HOWEVER, BECAUSE THIS INDUSTRY IS DEVELOPING TOO WELL IN AMERICA, STUDENTS ALL AROUND THE WORLD WANTS TO TAKE A SHARE. AFTER ABOUT TEN YEARS WHEN I AM FINALLY QUALIFIED AS A PSYCHIATRIST, THE MARKET WOULD BE SATURATED.

@ IN MY FIRST ENGLISH NOVEL SERIES "HARRY POTTER", WHAT ATTRACTS ME THE MOST IS NOT ITS PLOT WHICH IS FULL OF TWIST AND TURNS NOR ITS DRAMATICAL ADVENTURE BUT SLYTHERIN'S NOBLES. WITH A FEW SIMPLE SENTENCES AND ACTIONS THEY CAN DELIVER UNDERLYING MEANING. EVERY SINGLE SYLLABLE HAS ITS SPECIAL DEFINITION, THIS IS ONE OF THE REASON WHY BRITAIN SEEMS SO FASCINATING TO ME. THOSE CULTURES AND MANNERS that ARE surrounding SOMRTHING YOU WILL NEVER be understood UNDERSTAND UNLESS YOU do live REALLY LIFE IN IT.

The full, technical name of the protein better known as titin—a folded, spring-like protein that helps keep our muscles elastic. Total letter count: 189,819, is the longest word in English.

You can read the whole thing here, but if you, like Jimmy, don’t think this monstrous moniker should be considered a real English word, you’d find some support from linguists. As a technical scientific term, the full name of titin doesn't appear in any dictionary—not just because it would take 12 full pages to wrangle the 190,000-odd characters, but because of the way protein names are generated. According to international guidelines, a protein's technical title lists every single amino acid found inside it. Even the smallest proteins contain no fewer than 20 amino acids, making for some pretty long names in their own right; titin, however, is the human body's largest protein. Total amino acid count: 34,350. Spell out each of those acid names in a row and you get, well, a really long word. (You can see why scientists prefer titin.)

So, if dictionary editors don’t dare to spare their pages on titin’s full name, what is the longest word in the dictionary? That depends on which dictionary you consult. A few contenders:

The longest word in the Oxford English Dictionary is 45 letters long: Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. According to the OED, this synonym for silicosis was coined in the 1930s as a jab at overly-complicated medical terms. Yep, the longest word in the dictionary is a joke.

'Between' or 'Among': Which Is Correct?
Just between us: it's a complicated situation. by Merriam-Webster

... The two words have some degree of overlap, but also significant differences. Additionally, none of the above should be taken to mean that you may not have preferences in this matter, and you should feel entirely comfortable following your own self-imposed guidelines for when to use between and when to use among.

It should, however, be taken as a refutation of the over-generalizing rule that Frank Vizetelly espoused earlier in this article. It is not difficult to find cases in which among sounds wrong no matter what the number (when was the last time you heard anyone describe being “among the devil and the deep blue sea”?). And as for the question of whether between may be used for numbers greater than two, we have only to look elsewhere in Vizetelly’s own book to see that sometimes this works quite well.

In English, there are three “moods.” A mood is a way of using a verb to show the attitude of the speaker toward what he is saying. The Indicative mood expresses facts. All the tenses discussed in the Grammar Corner, Verb Tense section are in the indicative mood. The other two moods are the imperative mood and the subjunctive moods.
It is important to remember that there are only a few acceptable situations to use the command form in, such as talking to children, to your students, when giving instructions, etc. Otherwise, it is more polite to request people to do things, using modals such as “would,” “could,” “will” and “can”:

“Could you give me a wrench, please?”
“Will you please clean your room?”

I

WITHOUT, the night was cold and wet, but in the small parlour of Laburnam Villa the blinds were drawn and the fire burned brightly. Father and son were at chess, the former, who possessed ideas about the game involving radical changes, putting his king into such sharp and unnecessary perils that it even provoked comment from the white-haired old lady knitting placidly by the fire.
